  • About the Edition

Betty Mahmoody and her husband, Dr Sayyed Bozorg Mahmoody ("Moody"), came to Iran from the USA to meet Moody"s family. With them was their four-year-old daughter, Mahtob. Apalled by the squalor of their living conditions, horrified by what she saw of a country where women are merely chattels and Westerners are despised, Betty soon became desperate to return to the States. But Moody, and his often vicious family, had other plans. Mother and daughter became prisoners of an alien culture, hostages of an increasingly tyrannical and violent man.

Eventually, Betty was given the name of a man who would plan their perilous route out or Iran, a journey that few women or children had ever made. Their nightmare attempt to return home began in a bewildering snowstorm...

While watching Mahtob play in the park, Betty encountered Judy, another American woman married to an Iranian. Ellen: Well, I wanted to, I guess. Mahtob: Please let nothing separate us. Eventually, he claimed to not have the time and told her to go herself.

The children were not getting along and the cramped quarters were making everyone irritable. The first time she was pulled aside was because her roosarie large head scarf was not covering the hair on her forehead. Houssein: I don't think your father would have wanted you to go back if it meant losing your daughter. The hospital did so but Moody soon found out that it was not the wage they had agreed on. It can be viewed as simply a one-sided and bitter attack. Hamid sympathized with Betty, and offered her use of his telephone if she needed it.

I don't know. During the next two weeks, Betty and Mahtob longed for the vacation to be over. The two week long visit turned out to be a fake promise. Moody, the husband, was cruel. Mahtob: And keep us always safe in Your care. It can be viewed as simply a one-sided and bitter attack.
